Sometimes life hits you with a blow so hard, it shakes your entire world. For Dashrath Manjhi, known as the Mountain Man of India, that blow was the tragic loss of his beloved wife, Falguni Devi. But what followed is a story of grit, love, and a determination so fierce it moved mountains—quite literally.
The Man Behind the Mountain
Dashrath was born into a humble family in the remote village of Gehlaur, Bihar. He ran away as a boy to work in distant coal mines and later returned to become an agricultural laborer. Love found him in Falguni, a woman who became his wife and brought light to his life.
Then, tragedy struck. Falguni suffered a terrible fall down a mountain. The nearest doctor was miles away—55 kilometers to be exact. By the time she could get help, it was too late. Grief-stricken but fueled by a promise, Dashrath vowed to make sure no one else would suffer from such inaccessibility.
The Mountain Man’s Mission
Armed with nothing but a hammer and chisel, he set out to carve a path through the mountain that stood as a barrier between his village and the world. For 22 long years, he chipped away at the rocky obstacle, ignoring the jeers and disbelief of his neighbors.
Why would one man take on a mountain? Because love gives us superpowers. Because when the heart is broken, sometimes the strongest medicine is hope.
Triumph in the Face of Doubt
And then, the impossible became reality. The mountain that had separated Gehlaur from vital services was pierced. Dashrath created a 360-foot-long, 30-foot-wide passage—an artery of hope and progress for his community.
Today, the road stands as a monument to human perseverance, named in his honor by the Bihar government. His story reminds us that boundaries exist only until someone dares to break them.
What Can We Learn?
Dashrath Manjhi teaches us that no mountain is too big when the will to make a difference burns bright. He shows us the power of unwavering determination, the ripple effects of love, and the courage needed to stand alone for what’s right.
So often, we think challenges are insurmountable. But sometimes, we just need to start chipping away—one strike, one effort at a time.
This is Saikat Pal from DailyWel, encouraging you to find your mountain and start moving it today.
